Valerian Root (revisited)

Post by GK77 » Sat Sep 28, 2013 11:22 pm

It was always a staple in the herbal medicine chest for insomnia, but....
... I've also had some recent succes with VR for use in mild GABA (a) and (b) agonist withdrawls.
Specifically 3180 mg of powdered root (no noted standard % for valerenic acids). This is the lowest dose that works for me. Each cap contains 530 mg each.

Interestingly it doesn't work unless I open the caps and dump them into a glass of water.
I have experienced the same problem with capping kratom, ginseng etc.
They are almost always ineffective unless I decap them.

Has anyone else exp this?

Any other doses out there? What's your max dose?
And do you only use VR that has standardized valerenic acids, of simply powdered root?

Well in another life I had problems with xxxzepam and valerian did not help me much as far as I remember.

Now I don't look for stikny sedative valerian, and try to obtain fresher batches, with midl psychedelia (yes fresh valerian does not smell like feet, and valerenone as a funny look with a familiar ring).

Indeed I hear it is hallucinatory; that rabbit eludes me. Do you grow your own or wild harvest?
I had seeds once... germ rate was quite poor.

Anyways just had another 3000+mg of powder in water. Quiet relief again attained.
The very same bottle of valerian fails if I take VR in capsules... Its like I lack a gelatin enzyme or something. I just cant explain it.
Caps have worked in the past. Maybe its the veggie vs gelatin thing. Who knows.

I buy the roots at a very good pharmacy. They are properly stored and do not have the sock stink, or only very mildly. They smell more like a complex mix of earthy and flowery scents.
When they smell they are old and mostly sedative, when they do not (or nor much) they are fresher and have some hallucinatory poperties.
EO exists and will keep all the good stuff forever. I did not try eat, but took jatamansi (a close relative) oil quite some times with good effects.

Yes the stench is definitely what I'm after as the sedation/relaxation really helps.

Jatamansi huh? I'll look into that...

Some more information on Jatamansi here. Doesn't seem to have been studied much in humans.

I used 5:1 extract of Valerian root at 500-1,500 mg to counteract wd:s from 5 year use of Lyrica. In conjunction with l-theanine and sometimes ethanol, I found it helped against sleeplessness and anxiety. A terrible ordeal.

I have reverted back to vr for anxiety and insomnia ,.... surprisingly this time around it has a great sedative relaxing effect in combination with lemonbalm , they senergize very well together but I buy the whole root and ground root and crushed leave lemon balm mised together with both in bigger quantities than proscribed on the internet and mabey it had something to do with the fact that I was using saint johns wort with them ! (maoi) ....

I've tried every sedative plant I was able to put my hand on. That does not mean all of them, but still, a lot.
The most effective is, at least for me, lavender, no dout. And lemon balm is always a good thing to add to the equation.

I've read an old recipe: 1/4 lavender 1/4 st johns wort 1/4 valerian 1/4 hops. Never tested it but should work wonder on you since it's almost the combo you've already used.

Is that second 1/4th of lavender supposed to be VR?
