I live in Santa Barbara. Don't baby your plants too much right now, they are in shock from transport. daylength is getting very short right now, so they will grow slower and slower. don't worry about little changes in leaves and structure, all these things happen to new plants. Worry about your soil...

If they are breaking, then something is breaking them off, too strong water or something else. They may be rotting, but thats usually pretty obvious. The pieces you are working with may be too small. Add enough Nitrogen, you can set your pile on fire!!!..macadamia hull piles in Hawaii have to be dispersed and scattered to avoid this trouble. A well constructed large pile, (ie nice and hot) covered with a thick tarp or old carpet, would probably keep going thru the winter, with additions of green...

Adding homemade,correctly aged compost, helps to bring soils into balance. It will add "good" soil fungus as compared to "bad" fungus.
These "bad" ones often flourish when liquid or fast acting fertilizers are used.
Timed release fertilizers seems to avoid this trouble.

Kykeon: thanx for that link, it covers alot of the bases that people need to know. Also sums up alot of the information, which as you know is sometimes conflicting and confusing. The ideas on hardening off should be read by everyone who grows, as it may explain alot of difficulties people encounter ...
