Re: amanita muscaria pretrip -
I do not consider Ibotenic Acid as a baddie. It is listed in the Merck Index as a flavor enhancer. Yes, certain UV bands in sunlight change it into Muscimol. Heating only changes a very, very, small amount. I have always thought this is the reason why some Amanita muscaria are more psychoactive than...

Re: found these under some steps -
Panaeolus mushrooms will have black gills and black spores. These do not seem to be this case. slp/fmrc

Re: amanita muscaria pretrip -
The "baddie" in Amanita muscaria is Muscarine. Did not know you could change this into a "goodie" with heat. I have never seen a documented report of a death caused by this mushroom. Plenty have thought they were going to die. The mushrooms should be dried in sunlight to convert Ibotenic into Muscim...

Re: Are these mushies? -
I can tell by the picture that they are not Amanita or Lepiota. Don't look like any Psilocybe. Do gills attach to the stalk? Any spore prints to tell spore color? ID of a mushroom just by a picture on the computer is next to impossible without other data. Never eat an unknown mushroom. slp/fmrc

Is that a reddish bruising I see on the right mushroom? That would say Amanita rubescens. slp/fmrc

Re: Amanita Muscaria? -
Does not look like Amanita muscaria, any variation, to me. Amanita muscaria usually appear just about the time of the first frost. Most fruit under pine trees. Here on the gulf coast, they appear the end of November to the first part of December. As you go north, the appearance is earlier. Never con...
