Sick cactus, advice requested -

Post by Okarlplasst » Fri Dec 03, 2010 3:31 pm

Long time no see Edot community.

So, recently one of my cacti fell sick. I had been watching it closely, but today I decided that it was not getting better. It had never grown well under my care for whatever reason, while it's brethren had flourished. The sickness it has is quite unlike anything I have seen, so I was hoping for advice. I already dug it up and potted it hastily to bring it inside. Right now it's going into quarantine, so I won't have it anywhere near my seedlings. If it looks like it'll make it I won't use a premixed soil when I replant.

I live in California, zone 9 or 10.

The ribs have sort of peeled back and separated. Apologies for the red in the picture, I had some difficulties with my camera

So far I've hedged my bets on the pests or the rain if it's not due to a disease, leaning towards pests because I do have other cacti where there are bug chomp marks, but those are much bigger and scarred - the top hasn't separated as such.

It's not red in person. I had to borrow a camera to even get the picture, I'll see if I can get more pictures tomorrow. Basically, the ribs seem to be splitting at the top, doesn't look healthy at all underneath.

Edit: Noticed something in another post. Does frost damage on the tip look anything like this? All my other cacti are flourishing, which is what stumps me.

I'm no expert, but it could be increasing its number of ribs. This is not uncommon at all. More pics please.

How often do you water it?

I would take a side shot of the container and plant to see the relation of plant size to container size.

Frost can damage a san pedro, but a light frost usually shouldn't damage them too much, but will slow it's growth and maybe stress it.

Sorry for late reply, I've been traveling and working a lot. I've attached pictures taken today though.

I water irregularly, from once a week to once a month spring to fall, depending on how fast it dries out. The normal soil where I live is heavy clay, so below/around can be deceptively moist. I use plenty of gravel/pumice, perlite, and or sand to compensate when I plant in the ground.

I will be chopping this cactus by the end of the year and moving it inside to have it's cut end dried unless suggested otherwise.

So I take it that a chop is not necessary then? I guess I'll continue to leave it in observation for now. I was just worried as insect marks on my other cacti are quite minimal, and did not display like this.

I have about 20 plants, healthy for many years. They are indoors in Northern California. I put them out in shaded sun once and they got 'sunburned' I thought--a yellow scale or crust all over them. I spoke to some growers, repotted them in a good cactus mix, and they began growing---new buds of cactus breaking through, in the original dark healthy green, but they eventually grew yellow and scaley again. They're under a weak grow-light, in a shaded window, and I don't know how to help them. One large one has since died. Any help or ideas? COuld it be mites of some kind. Need help please.
