More PC questions for the tekkies >>> -

Post by GK77 » Sun Sep 19, 2010 10:25 pm

Running Vista home premium

So I was given an unopened Maxtor Ultra 200GB Ultra ATA/133 HD.
My MB only has SATA connections so I bought a PCI mini card that had a ATA connector for this older HD's ribbon band (and a few extra SATA's as well)

I physically installed the drive, power cable, ATA ribbon and turned the PC on.
My first issue was Vista wont run the CD that came with it. It says it only runs on 2000/xp...etc.

When I am viewing the newly installed ATA HD in computer management>storage>disk management, it shows the Maxtor drive, but says it only has 252 MB.

I know there is something I havent done but I cant find it anywhere. I cant run the CD, so what can I do?

Thanks in advance folks ,

G7

Buy a Mac.

JK, check the manufacture of the adapter card's website for updated Vista drivers.

I'm an idiot. Hence I probably should get a Mac, they seem so much easier.
I was reading drive E which is my DVD/CD drive with a disk in it that apparently had 252MB on it... duh.

So yeah you are right. I updated the driver for the SATA/ATA PCI Mini controller and ditched the disk that came with the Hard drive (cause it was so old) and instead d/l the new version of the HD setup file.

Formatting now, but I think I am in the clear. This shit makes me crazy ;)

Don't forget to set master/slave/cable select

you can get away with cable select most likely.

DONT GET A MAC< LEARN TO USE YOUR COMPUTER! lol.

Apple is the new Microsoft. All it took was millions of $ from Bill Gates... Yes, Microsoft owns(ed?) a good part of Apple Computer.

That was paid back years ago. Apple's current market capitalization is actually higher that that of MS. Being the devout Unix and Linux nut that I am, osx is fantastic.

Apple's are great, but the thing that a LOT of people don't realize is that the internals are identical to PCs. Sure they might use high quality parts, but your high quality PC gaming motherboard is just as good if not better. The problem with Mac's are when your motherboard fails, be prepared to pretty much just go and buy another Mac cause the board itself is like $700+, which a real high quality PC motherboard is only $300, something to think about anyway.

Though I just bought a Macbook Pro off eBay lol, my first Mac! I still have a Core i5 PC gaming tower, killer!
