You get closer to it little by little, by detaching yourself from the current circumstances and just observing your self and the space around you.
As you go deeper, you begin to observe dreams and become lucid.
As your lucidity peaks by again the same process, you reach that place. The meaning of life.

At least that's how it happened for me.

Ok can someone help explain this for me. The other day I started to meditate impulsively. I meditated for maybe 20 minutes then went to lie down. In a short amount of time I became aware that I was in a complex(building) of some kind I began wandering around as there was a series of rooms connected to one another. When I came to a white bridge I became aware that some presence was near by, as I am still culturally programmed to be afraid of seeing other beings in my head. It did not show itself though I still knew it was nearby. At this time I was in the middle of the bridge, and I saw that on either side of the bridge was 3 curvy slides heading outwards in a slow gradual descent downwards. At this time the presence that was nearby told me to stay on the main path. Now during this whole experience I was aware of my body, but also aware of this other reality I was in. I couldn't move at all and my breathing was very shallow almost as if I was in the middle of a heavy sleep. At this time I realized that saliva was building up at the back of my throat, and that if I did not swallow I would choke(this is how I realized that I couldn't move) When I finally came out of it and was able to swallow. It felt almost as if an electric claw made of wire had been dragged through my brain; not painful but definitely noticeable. This feeling persisted for several hours before departing.

I was completely sober the whole time.
I have hewn many briars in my garden, but many are still close.

Yes, absolutely. I recommend reading William James' "The Varieties of Religious Experience" and also the writings of Christian mystics, such as Julian of Norwich.
