Milk Thistle

Postby feral » Fri Nov 11, 2011 4:23 pm

Just wondering what people know about milk thistle.

For liver protection, is extract best? Does anybody know the actives we are looking for in the extract?

I would like to not use an extract.

From what I've read the seeds are mainly used but I don't know how many you would need. I guess just eating them is the way to go.

Then there is the case of phytoestrogens in milk thistle. I've also always wondered about phytoestrogens. There are conflicting views on this. There are possible adverse effects on men due to their structure being similar to estrogen but there's also at least one study suggesting that there is no affect. I also read some where that cancer risk is increased with milk thistle. Don't really know what to think. Soya has phyto's and it's widely consumed but you also hear that fertility in the population is getting worse.

Dont use it long term. Use it when on liver toxic meds, or for a week during/after a drinking binge.
Basically use it whenever the liver is under excess stress

Ive only used standarized extract. Fresh seeds may work but have no idea about doses.

Not much is safe to be taken long term honestly. concerns over the phytoestrogens and cancer have been discussed. Why are you considering it, do you have any recent liver enzyme tests to reference?

no, just chronical hepatitis - thought it would be a good idea taking it on a regular basis - maybe i better look up some studies or so before continuing.
don't know my actual values, wheren't that bad at the last tests, but this stuff seldom is getting better over the years ...

In your case the weight of the evidence for using it would be greater than not. The phytoestrogen and cancer connection hasnt been proved.
I use it now while I am on the med INH, for another 3 months. Then ill pull off it.
If I had chr hep, I would not think twice about taking a quality extract of silymarin at therapeutic doses. Reward greatly outweighs risk in your case.

thanks =)
i found some uk vendor that ships a pretty high percentage sillymarin milk thistle extract for an unbeatable price - those high dosed "regular" preps at the pharmacy cost easylie 80-100€ per month ...
and thanks for the hints, too, i think i better look that up, always good to be informed on what you are popping.
good luck to you! (what's INH?)
